Walking the Line
digitalis media was always there. It just needed me to give it a name and the time it deserved.
After a PhD in molecular biology, studying motor neurone disease, I moved onto other aspects of the nervous system, developing gene therapy techniques for Parkinson's disease. After several further years at 'the bench' researching cell-cell communication in the brain, I decided it was time to explore other creative areas.
For years I'd been dabbling with this idea, toying with that notion - with more interests than you could shake a stick at, I began drifting into the digital arts, writing, and film making.
Now, I'm somewhere between a scientist and an artist. This powerful mix allows me to enjoy the intellectual landscapes of science while developing new means of expressing the outcomes of those explorations. A natural consequence of this mix is that I'm frequently described as a 'science communicator', though I admit I don't really understand why - I'm simply expressing my fascination of science in ways that feel natural.
digitalis media uses words and film in an attempt to convey the wonder I experience daily at the machinations of this remarkable universe. To stimulate the mind, not just intellectually but through beautiful, moving and experimental imagery. If I can leave a viewer or reader in some way changed, in some way provoked, then I've succeeded.
If you want to know more about my filmmaking approach, motivations and inspirations you can watch me here, being interviewed by Channel Four's FourDocs team...
Either working alone, or in collaboration, if a project feels genuinely rich, interdisciplinary, and fun - I'm interested. If you'd like to know more, or have a project you feel could benefit from my approach, get in touch using the email link below, or:
